How Guide Dogs change lives

How you help

Give a gift that keeps on giving, growing, playing, learning, excelling, achieving, and eventually graduating!

Pleased to meet you, pups!

As a Puppy Pal, your contribution creates value immediately—puppy training starts just after birth in the nursery. You get to see the very first glimpses of the puppies you support. You have the chance to name the puppies, and attend an exclusive ‘Meet the Pups’ event where you can play and cuddle to your heart’s content.

Two puppies

Support for lots of learning.

At around age one, puppies start learning the sights, sounds, and smells they’ll encounter when they grow up as Guide Dogs. During two years of training, puppies rely on your generous support for vet care, vaccinations, food, toys, and ongoing learning. You’ll get regular updates on how your litter is progressing.

All grown up and graduated—thanks to you!

If puppies do well in early training, they graduate to the next stage: working one-on-one with an instructor and wearing a special Guide Dog harness. Harnesses are purchased with your contributions as a Puppy Pal. At the end of training, our Guide Dogs will be paired to someone with blindness or low vision in a life-changing partnership.

Why your support is essential

If you have ever seen a Guide Dog in action, you will know they are very intelligent animals. Highly disciplined, skilled and dependable, the dogs offer enhanced quality of life for people with blindness or low vision.

Unsurprisingly, their skills require intensive training. Our training never stops. Month in and month out, we prepare new puppies to embark on their journey towards working alongside a person with blindness or low vision.

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, maintain and train each puppy to work as a Guide Dog. We are Australia’s largest and most successful breeder and trainer of Guide Dogs.

Guide Dogs Victoria provides more than 70% of the working dogs for Victorians with blindness or low vision and our dogs are highly regarded around the world.

We are proud to have been named Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Charity for the past five consecutive years.

Our services are provided free of charge to clients on an ongoing basis. We receive less than 9% of our funding needs from the government, which is why your support is so important. You fund the essential training programs that allow these intelligent animals to support so many people who are blind or have blindness or low vision.
