Beacon Technology Roll Out

New beacon systems are now live in seven of Melbourne’s most popular train stations to help passengers with low vision and blindness to navigate Melbourne’s train network!

Working with PTV and Metro Trains Melbourne, Beacon technology has now gone live in Melbourne train stations: Flinders Street, Flagstaff, Parliament, Melbourne Central, Richmond and Footscray stations. The system at Southern Cross station has also been expanded.

Beacons improve accessibility and provide for greater independence to people with low vision and blindness, assisting them to safely navigate throughout Melbourne.

The beacon system is easy to use, and can be accessed by downloading the free mobile app, BlindSquare Event. BlindSquare is the world’s most popular accessible GPS-app developed for people with vision loss. It describes the environment, announces points of interest and street intersections as you travel. You can download the app from the Apple App store (available to Apple phones only).
