What is BlindSquare?

The BlindSquare app is an accessible Global Positioning System (GPS), revolutionising accessible navigation both indoors and outdoors.

Specifically developed in collaboration with people who are blind or have low vision, BlindSquare is a new solution that combines the latest technology to offer accessible travel directions, along with the names and locations of millions of Points of Interests (POIs).

How does it work?

BlindSquare uses GPS and a compass to locate you. It then gathers information about the surrounding environment to communicate your location to you by voice.

With BlindSquare, you’ll know where you are, where you’re going, and be able to travel with confidence.

Keen to learn more?

Attend our upcoming virtual group session to gain an overview of the BlindSquare app and how to apply the app’s features to support your Orientation and Mobility.

To participate, you will need:

  • iPhone 4 and newer. According to BlindSquare’s website in order to operate the app, you require an iPhone 4 or later, or an iPad 3G or later. You will also need a data plan as BlindSquare receives information about your surroundings via the internet.
  • BlindSquare app installed on your device before the session. BlindSquare Event Edition is allowing users free access to the full-featured version until November 2020.

Sessions will be held online, via the popular video platform, Zoom. To attend, we require participants to have access to a reliable device with stable internet connection and to be familiar with using Zoom.

The BlindSquare introductory session will be facilitated by Guide Dogs Victoria Orientation and Mobility Specialists. The session is aimed at children aged 12 to 18 years. While parents or guardians need not join in, it is beneficial that they are present at the start of each session and available throughout should the need arise.

How much:

This program has been made possible due to the contributions of the Shine On Foundation.

For students with an NDIS plan, the estimated cost of one session will be $25.72.

NDIS funding covers the service delivery of Orientation and Mobility Specialists during the program but does not cover the development and implementation of the program.
